WARRIOR
In nature, different living organisms may control the same body in various situations. Responding to such phenomena, Ling Pui Sze created the Warrior series where each of the organisms in it represents a warrior. The sculpture installations represent her imagination of how they would defy the laws of nature if they had free will.

2019, Bamboo stick, wood, ink on paper, lead screw, 146 x 186 x 60cm
Warrior 4 uses cordyceps as the subject. Under normal circumstances, when an insect is encroached on by a mycelium, its body will be controlled by the mycelium and held fixed in a certain position. It will involuntarily produce spores to help spread the mycelium to seek its next host. Yet, the warrior in Warrior 4 resists the forcible restructuring of its body, twisting into a writhing and struggling form so that the spores can no longer ascend.
The work is made of bamboo strips, paper, wooden balls and screws, and is an early example of her attempts at paper collage sculpture. The complete, solid wooden ball (the spores) and the decaying, hollow paper structure (the worm) create a sense of powerlessness that emerges from the desperate struggle in the face of a foregone conclusion. |
