In particular it is our hope to examine the discursive and wide ranging influences Lui Shou-kwan’s legacy left behind. We will feature works by 12 of Lui’s hundreds of students, specifically the “group of students who became the cornerstone of the Hong Kong arts scene” and who were inspired by Lui Shou-kwan. Included are Eddie Cheung Shu-sang, Cheung Shu-sun, Irene Chou, Chui Tze-hung, Pat Hui, Kan Tai-keung, Koo Mei, Lee Ching-man, Leung Kui-ting, Poon Chun-wah, Laurence Tam and Wucius Wong. Another focus is how these artists “in turn passed on their knowledge and accomplishments to the next generation of students” from this new generation we have selected eight artists from CUHK, where Lui taught, the Hong Kong Arts Centre, and several new emerging artists. Included are, Cheuk Ka-wai, Cherie, Ho Kwun-ting, Hung Keung, Kassia Ko, Lau Hok-shing, CC Ling Pui-sze, Wang Xu, Stanley Wong (anothermountainman) Additionally a photographic selection of ephemera, including letters, photographs and diaries from the Lui Shou-kwan archive will be on view for the first time. |

2 + 2 Artists: Cheng Tan Shan Sam, Law Ka-nam Bosco, CC Ling Pui Sze and Zhang Xiaoli Opening Reception: 10 June, 2015, 6 - 8pm Exhibition: 10 June 2015 to 9 July, 2015 Address: EC Gallery, G/F, 72a Hollywood Road, Central, Hong Kong Opening Hours: Tue – Sat, 10:30am - 7:00pm; Sun 1:00 – 7:00pm EC Gallery is delighted to present 2+2 local emerging artists in this joint exhibition. It happened to be two friends sharing a working studio; four artists in two pairs, and two studios. Like the old saying goes, “making friends is easy but sharing a room is hard”. As we probably remember from the college days, getting along with the roommate is no easy. Once graduated, these roommates become the top choices to share a place with if we intent to leave parents’ apartment and be independent. It’s the same case for sharing studio rent if someone wishes to have a place to keep making art; especially with the expensive rental rate in Hong Kong. After graduation, CC Ling Pui Sze and Law Ka-nam Bosco have found a suitable working studio in Tsuen Wan, while Zhang Xiaoli and Cheng Tan Shan Sam have settled down into a studio in Kwai Hing. Visually appearing like abstract works, CC Ling Pui Sze mainly focuses on collage of mix media. She obsessed in the process of deconstructing and recomposing. In her works, we can see organic forms continuously splitting and combining, like replicating the evolution of life. Most of her works are over one meter, and some are even longer than two meters. Her style seems like freely expressed ink painting, but it is not difficult to see rich details inside. Ling is inspired by the evolution of cells, and she enlarges pictures of various changing forms of splitting and combining. Though working in the same studio, Law Ka-nam Bosco has a very different approach. He works mostly within the half meter size range, pencil painting of geometric patterns with extreme details. Depicting patterns, because they do not forming into any recognizable thing, or sketch of some design. Law makes no advance plans for the overall painting while composing the works; instead, he paints from inside out gradually and spontaneously with imagination. Similarly, the creating process of Ling also involves making collages without drafting. This is akin to the cells which have been evolving for billions of years but still not knowing the final forms they are going to be. Somehow influences may be exchanged between two people under the same roof for a while. People, who can’t get along with one another, won’t think of sharing a studio. It’s not only that their personalities complement each other, but there’s also some level of similarity on their artistic creativity. It’s an interesting natural phenomenon; maybe we can call it “as birds of a feather flock together”. It could be the results of working in the same studio, accompanying each other though each person is busy with own work, encouraging, communicating, criticizing, advising and developing together. The four artists come from different backgrounds with varied directions and methods of art making, searching for their own unique styles in this ever-changing stage of the contemporary art. They inherit the traditional culture while pursuing innovation, and marrying both in the process of their creations. |
CC & SE A two-person exhibition featuring CC Ling Pui Sze (Hong Kong) & Stephen Eastaugh (Australia) Date: 20 October - 1 November, 2014 Address: China Art Project Space, 2/F, 126 Wing Lok Street, Sheung Wan Recent fine arts graduate, Ling Pui Sze (known to her friends as CC) had her first significant exhibition in early 2014 at Hong Kong’s Gallery Exit. In contrast, veteran Australian artist Stephen Eastaugh has travelled and exhibited around the world in numerous solo and group exhibitions over the last thirty years. Eastaugh has built an impressive body of artwork about Antarctica and Asia. He will exhibit new paintings and drawings done in both areas, complemented with recent videos. |
It all begins in the sea CC LING Pui Sze Solo Exhibition Date: 28 February - 29 March 2014 Address: Gallery EXIT, 3/F, 25 Hing Wo Street, Tin Wan, Aberdeen Gallery EXIT is pleased to present “It all begins in the sea”, Ling Pui Sze’s first solo exhibition with the gallery. Developed from Ling's fascination with images found in biological and marine research, the featured ink compositions are simulations of the trajectories of organic form evolution. Core to her practice is a process-based research to understand the fluid and intuitive stages of cell reproduction. Through a process of reduction and dispersion, strips of ink-jet printed images of cells and watermarks are juxtaposed and layered following the strip’s shape and pattern. As the thin fragments of cells group together to form organic constellations, ink strokes are applied to the painting's surface, enabling organisms to grow both in depth and texture. Water patterns, amorphous organism, fossils and sea creatures are just some of the forms that emerge out of these rich canvases. Sometimes faces or even eyes appear out of the multilayered surface, emerging in complete autonomy. Click here to download the booklet of the exhibition. |
