Strings Drawing
"Strings Drawing" is a captivating work that merges Chinese music with visual art. Using ink as her medium, artist Ling Pui Sze transforms the dynamics of music into stunning ink paintings through her performance on the zither. The accompanying video captures her rendition of the traditional piece "Songs of Fishing Boats at Dusk." Ling employs a specially designed zither that allows her to play and paint simultaneously. As she performs, the strings absorb ink and, through their vibrations, transfer it onto watercolor paper, resulting in unique ink dots. Each artwork draws inspiration from traditional guzheng repertoire, including "Spring Seedlings," "Jackdaws Playing In the Water," and "Milking Dance." The distribution and gathering of ink dots convey the emotional nuances, pitch ranges, and frequencies of the music. Each ink wash piece embodies the emotions of the performance, channeling her movements into the strings and transforming musical notes into abstract patterns on paper, serving as an alternative form of notation. During its exhibition at the Taoyuan Museum of Fine Arts, "Strings Drawing" evolved into an interactive experience, inviting the audience to lay xuan paper on the instrument and play, allowing them to create their own ink paintings. |
