Comfortability

Tobacco as a plant has multiple representations in modern society. Despite its medical use, it is generally unwelcomed by the society for the sake of health. For the artist, the smell of tobacco holds a special place in her personal memory. When she was home sick during an overseas residency programme, she began to realise her profound connection with the smell of tobacco. Though not a smoker herself, she has been surrounded by groups of smokers since childhood. In this series of works exploring the properties of tobacco, the artist is experimenting paper production technique by mixing tobacco herbs, as well as appropriating cigarette filters in a sculptural work. Through the process of handling the notorious herbs, the artist question the representation of tobacco - as a natural species, in both personal and social dimensions.

煙草作為植物物種在現代社會中具有多種含意。撇除其醫學作用，煙草因為健康考慮，普遍不被社會歡迎。對於凌佩詩來說，煙草是引發回憶及熟悉感之物。在海外駐留期間，思鄉情切令她意識到自己對煙草氣味的思念。縱然她本人沒有吸煙習慣，她從小就被一群吸煙者包圍著。在這一系列圍繞煙草的作品中，藝術家在她最擅長的紙本創作中解構及重組煙絲，並在雕塑作品中運用香煙濾咀，以探討氣味、自然物料、及記憶的關係。從處理煙草的過程中，藝術家詰問自然物種在個人及社會層面上的不同面向。
